Rev. Lee instituted the service of Evensong from the Book of Common Prayer, almost from the beginning of her time with us here at St. Cyprian's. It continues now at 4 p.m. on Friday afternoons. When Lee is away, the writer is often recruited to stand in her stead.
This is a very small, quiet service -- but we'd like to see it grow, and become a bit more lively. To that end, this year the practice has been to have no homily, but to interact, celebrant and congregation, in a discussion about the weekly readings.
While Rev. Lee is away this month, there will be only two services of Evensong: Fridays May 10 and 24, both at 4 p.m.
So you can get a head's up on the readings and discussion for May 10, here's what's scheduled for that date:
Ehud assassinating Eglon Ford Maddox Brown, 1908 |
- Judges 3:12 - end of the chapter -- the story of Ehud, with a brief mention of his successor. Warning: violence abounds!
- Hebrews 3 - all of it -- a comparison of Jesus with Moses (guess who comes out on top!), and a warning against unbelief.
- Psalms 51 and 52 -- very focused on sin!
Rather grim reading for a spring afternoon, eh?
The good news is that Ascension is Thursday May 9, so perhaps that can help our spirits dwell on things above!
Have a good week and see you Friday!
- Margaret
